Social Studies
Before break we did holidays around the world to teach scholars about different cultures. We started the month doing Chinese New Year because as a school we do a holiday competition during the month of December. Every grade level gets a holiday and we decorate the hallway with what we learned about our holiday. We leanred about the Dragon Dance and how in the Chinese culture the Dragon represents good luck. We made paper lanterns to represent their lantern festival and we made fortune cookies with our own personal touch, instead of traditional fortune cookies we made sight word fortune cookies! Finally, we made bubble maps to describe Chinese New Year! The week before break we a rotation through each Kindergarten class where the scholars go to learn about a different culture in each room. In my class we learned about Hanukkah! The kids got to make edible dreidels out of marshmallows and pretzels! At the end we made a big circle map of all the things we had learned about Hanukkah! In Ms. Smith's class the scholars got to learn about the Mexican hat dance and they made poinsettias! In Ms. Remchuk's class they learned about traditional Christmas and made Christmas trees. In Ms. Lampley's class they learned about Kwanzaa and colored their own Mishumaa Saba. The kids really loved switching classes and getting to do different crafts for each holiday!
