Literacy
Reading:
I am so impressed with the amount of growth that has happened this quarter in reading! These little friends are almost ready for first grade and I am already getting sad about them leaving me. We have started non-fiction books. First we practiced being able to tell the difference between fiction and non-fiction by using all of the text features and a double bubble map! After that we have been focusing on the importance of non-fiction texts and how they really teach us new information. We have been using the pictures to help us understand what we are learning. We are also starting to learn the main topic of books. We use the pictures and the title of the book to help us figure out what the book is mostly about. This can be a tricky topic so feel free to practice this skill at home after you are done reading! Next we will be going back to fiction once again to focus on characters, setting, and beginning, middle, and end. These are skills you can practice while reading at home too! These are very important skills to help us with our end of year TRC test!
Phonics:
We have been practicing digraphs and blends in phonics. A digraph is when two letters come together to make a new sound like in sh, ch, and th. Blends are when two letters are together and make a distinct consonant sound like in bl, sl, pl, ng, st, sn. These can be tricky so try and point them out when you are reading with your scholar at home! Next we will be starting the long vowels with magic E words, long vowel at the end of the word, and Y saying the long vowel sound of E and I.
Writing:
Thank you to everyone that was able to make it out for our 3rd quarter writing celebration! We had so much fun and were so happy you were able to come in and see all of the hard work these kiddos put in every day! I am sad to say that our how to writing unit is over! It is my favorite unit to teach and I love getting to see all of the things the kids are able to do! We are starting our persuasive/opinion writing unit now. Be prepared for these little scholars to save the world :) We started the unit with a circle map for problems we see either at school, home, park, the world, etc. I am so excited to see what this unit brings in their writing! Be prepared to be persuaded at home :) We are hoping to have another writing celebration at the end of this unit!
